Abstract
The report deals with a project The National Research Center in Cairo is carrying out with the aim of increasing tomato-production by directly assisting the farmers as well as advising and training extension specialists and agricultural officers of the project areas.
The farmers of the project are given advice on the right inputs at the right time, and are supplied with relevant production means to implement the recommendations.

As the first phase of this programme, the main factors hindering high productivity were identified.
These were bad varieties, inadequate plant-protection-programmes in the nursery and in the field, inproper soil-cultivation, poor stand in the field, incorrect application of fertilizers and mismanaged irrigation.

The next step was to design an integrated programme with the aim of overcoming these obstacles.

From a modest start in 1979–80, the programme has expanded every year, and covered in 1984 19.612 feddans with the participation of 15.652 farms located in 243 villages of 4 governorates.
The production of the project-farms has increased drastically, 3 to 8 folds, and also the project has had a favourable effect on farms outside the project.
