Abstract
Aqueous solutions of 25 ppm GA4/7 and/or 10 ppm BA were applied at various stages of development to inflorescences of tomato plants.
The experiments were conducted in the greenhouse and in the field during 1979 and 1980. The number of flowers on the first 3 inflorescences of tomato plants was significantly increased when BA alone or BA in combination with GA4/7 was used.
Fruit set and yield was substantially increased in both greenhouse and field experiments.
Soluble sugars and starch content of inflorescences treated with BA and GA4/7 were significantly higher than untreated control.
In the post anthesis stage and after BA treated inflorescences had the highest levels of soluble sugars in the greenhouse.
The low carbohydrate content of the high temperature field grown plants resulted in a much reduced inflorescence size.
