A NEW LINE OF TOMATO (LYCOPERSICON ESCULENTUM) SUITABLE FOR FRESH MARKET AND PROCESSING IN THE SUDAN

Segregating generations of four parents crosses to develop fresh market and processing tomatoes in the Sudan were handled by the pedigree method of selection.

Hybridization involved the varieties Campbell 52, Texas TM 148 (a high temperature tolerant), 36 – 10 (a firm fleshed globular fruit tomato) and the wild relative PI-134, 418 (Lycopersicon hirsutum f. glabratum).

The hybridization was started by the interspecific cross of the variety Texas TM 148x Lycopersicon hirsutum f. glabratum as a male parent to avoid sterility of F₁ then crossed to the variety Campbell 52, the latter being a female parent.
Resultant F₁ of the three parents crosses was then crossed to 36 – 10 reciprocally.
However, some of the three parents crosses (Texas TM 148, PI 134 418 and Campbell 52) were handled.

Segregating families and single plants selections were evaluated for fruit setting ability, size, flesh texture, pH, TSS, flavor, color, cracking and meatiness.

By F6, line 6450 – 5 – 8 – 1 – 29 – 2, designated Hudeiba-1, was developed suitable for fresh market production and processing.
