Abstract
Garlic, Allium sativum L., is known as a sterile plant.
However, the present author made an expedition to Central Asia in 1983 to seek fertile garlic and collected a number of garlic clones.
Next year, some of the collected clones were found to be fertile by growing them up to flowering.
Their seed productivity and seed germinability were examined by selfing and crossing.
One clone collected in Kirgiz showed male sterility, and it was found to produce the highest number of seeds among the collected clones.
The seeds produced from this male sterile clone in the following year also showed high germination rate in different crosses.
More than half of the Fl seedlings between this male sterile clone and a few other fertile clones also showed pollen sterility.
