Abstract
Though shallots are the traditional crop in Ethiopia, onions are becoming more widely grown in recent years.
Currently, the crops are produced in different parts of the country for local consumption and for export, including the export of the flowers by air to European market.
The best growing altitude for onions under Ethiopian condition is between 700 and 1800 m above sea level.
A survey made in 1987 estimated the total area under onions and shallot in Ethiopia to be about 10.000 ha with the total production of about 75.500 tonnes.
Based on the importance of onions, research at Nazeret research center has mainly been given to onions.
The main focus of research center has mainly been given to onions.
Research for the past 20 years has been on variety development, cultural management, cost of production studies and different seed production techniques.
