Abstract
During 1992/1993 a trial was conducted at Nuble province (36° 32″ south latitude) in order to evaluate the effect of the sowing date on the production of three storage varieties of onion: Valenciana, Valenciana-INIA y Valcatorce.
The sowing dates were: July 7, July 21, August 5, August 20 and September 4. Number of green leaves 90 days after transplant, total and commercial yield, bulb characteristics and storage potential were determined.
For the three varieties, the best result, in all evaluations, was obtained in July 21 sowing date.
Plants sown in July 7 were under unfavourable conditions during its initial growth and that negatively affect the final yield.
August and September seedings, that are commonly used in the region, are not recommended because of the high production of "thick-necking", small size bulbs and low storage potential.
All varieties had the same response to the sowing date.
The highest in yield was Valcatorce, followed by Valenciana and Valenciana-INIA.
