INFLUENCE OF PLANTING DATE AND SEED CLOVES SIZE ON LEAF AREA AND YIELD OF TWO GARLIC CULTIVARS (ALLIUM SATIVUM L.)

Abstract
The goal of this work was to evaluate the effect of seed cloves size and planting dates on the amount of leaf area (LA) produced and bulb weight (BW). Experiments were carried out in field plots, distributed in a randomized block design with five replications.
Blanco and Colorado cultivars were used.
Blanco seed cloves weight (SCW) were 9.78 g, 5.28 g and 2.51 g.
Colorado SCW were 6.16 g, 5.25 and 2.50 g.
Both cultivars were planted on 24 April, 14 May and 7 June.
Bulb dry matter (BDM) and LA were periodically determined.
Bulb fresh weight was obtained after harvesting and curing indoors.
In Blanco cultivar, largest LA (5.82 dm2) and highest BW (70.7 grams) were obtained from largest cloves planted on the first date.
Smallest cloves planted on last date decreased LA 45% and BW 58%. In Colorado, highest (54.3 g) and lowest (31.8 g) BW were obtained in the first date, but the relation among SCW and planting date was not so clear as in Blanco.
Proportion of bulbs with larger diameter increased in those plots with larger cloves and early plantings.
The ratio BW harvested / SCW planted was higher in small cloves than in large ones with a tendency to decrease in last planting dates in both cultivars.
A close association between LA and bulb weight was obtained.
