Abstract
The cultivation of Persoonia virgata as a floricultural crop is currently restricted by propagation difficulties.
In south-east Queensland, stems of P. virgata are commercially harvested all year round from natural populations and sold on the domestic and export flower market.
Propagation studies have been conducted with seeds and cuttings.
Seed germination of 50% can be achieved by fermenting the fruit, removing at least half of the endocarp, and culturing in an aseptic environment.
The rooting of cuttings is possible when juvenile plant material, of selected genotype, is used.
Plants that have been successfully propagated are being maintained in a containerised production system, in either a shadehouse or full sun.
The studies are indicating that commercial production of P. virgata will eventually be possible, with more research necessary on crop management requirements.
