Abstract
An inventory of the actually grown sweet cherry varieties of the two main production areas in Switzerland was made.
10 000 farmers were requested to quote their cherry varieties.
More than 2500 answered the questionnaire.
Questionnaire analysis including thorough checks for duplicates resulted in a list of 585 varieties.
More than 50% of the local varieties were quoted less than four times and were considered to be endangered.
Rare varieties were examined and characterised during farm visits.
From these, ten dessert cherry varieties and nine processing cherry varieties (suitable for mechanical harvest) were chosen for further field testing.
