INVESTIGATIONS ON THE FINDING OF EFFECTIVE POLLINATOR(S) FOR TAURUS SWEET CHERRIES

Abstract
Turkey is one of the major sweet cherry producing countries in the world.
Late season Taurus Mountain’s (elevation is above 1200 m from sea level) sweet cherries produced in Darbogaz, Ali Hocali, Aktoprak (Ulukisla) and Ömerli (Pozanti) are mostly used for export.
Although they look quite similar, there are lots of types and they look like the four main Turkish export cvs or types: ‘Aksehir Napoleon’, ‘0900 Ziraat’, ‘Malatya Dalbasti’ and ‘P. Ömerli’. The complexity of types or cvs creates important pollination problems resulting in poor fruit set.
In order to solve this problem ‘B. Gaucher’, ‘Durano di Cesena’, ‘Sari’, ‘Larian’, ‘M. Marvel’, ‘Noble’ which flower in the same period as the 4 main types or cvs were chosen as pollinators.
Besides, the 4 main cvs were also used as pollinators for ‘Darbogaz’, ‘Ali Hocali’, ‘Aktoprak’ and ‘Ömerli’ cherries in order to check their varietal relationships.
The pollen quality of experimental cvs were investigated by viability and germination tests.
After the fruits matured they were counted for determination of fruit set and analysed for pomological characteristics such as fruit and stone weight, fruit size and total soluble solids (TSS). According to the two-year’s experimental results; none of these 4 main cvs were self-compatible.
Besides, they could not set fruit when they were cross-pollinated with each other.
Among the pollinators ‘B. Gaucher’, ‘Durano di Cesena’, ‘M. Marvel’, ‘Noble’, ‘Larian’, ‘Sari’ have produced quite good results for different types or cvs.
Generally, these pollinators have positive effects on the fruit quality.
