Abstract
The effect on yield, cracked and rotten fruits by three different systems for plastic tree covers together with uncovered control ‘Van’ sweet cherry trees (Prunus avium L.) is reported.
The objectives were to decide any influence on reduced amounts of cracked and rotten fruits.
The experiment was carried out during 1994 and 1995 at Ullensvang Research Centre.
The covering system consisted of wooden poles in the row with a high tensile wire by the tops.
The trees were covered by cross laminated polyethylene sheets supported by the top wire and were tied with ropes to the neighbour rows.
The covering period lasted for 3 weeks prior to harvest.
The three different covering methods were: permanent covering, covering only when raining and umbrella covering (a steel pole in the middle of each tree supported a piece of polyethylene sheet). The experiment was conducted on 5-year-old vertical axis trained trees, spaced 2×4 m and limited to 3.0 m height during two seasons.
The number of days with precipitation >0.1 mm during the covering period was 13 days the first year and 9 days the second year.
Covered trees reduced the number of cracked and rotten fruits significantly and increased the marketable yield.
No differences between the covering methods were observed.
