Abstract
The previous NCl40 trial testing cherry rootstocks was planted in 1987 at 20 sites in North America and was completed in 1996. It tested the newest cherry rootstocks that were available at the time with both sour cherry (‘Montmorency’ (M)) and sweet cherry (‘Hedelfingen’ (H) and ‘Bing’ (B), eastern and western North America, respectively) scions.
A new trial will be planted at 12 sites throughout North America in 1998. The sites along with scion cultivar for 1998 include: British Columbia (B), California (B), Colorado (B), Michigan (M, H), New York (M, H), Ontario (M, H), Oregon (B) (2 sites), Pennsylvania (M, H), Utah (M, B), Washington (B) (2 sites), and Wisconsin (M). The rootstocks for the sweet cherry trials include: Gisela 5, Gisela 6, and Gisela 7 (from previous trial); new Giessen rootstocks Gi 195/20, Gi 209/1, Gi 473/10 and Gi 318/17 (‘Bing’ only); Weiroot (W) 10, W13, W53, W72, W154, and W158; Tabel® Edabriz; CT500, CT2753, and Erdi V (P. mahaleb from Hungary); MxM 2 (‘Hedelfingen’ only), and mazzard seedling and P. mahaleb seedling as the controls.
The rootstocks for the sour cherry trials include: Gisela 5, Gisela 6, and Gisela 7 (from previous trial); new Giessen rootstocks Gi 195/20 and Gi 209/1; Weiroot (W) 10, W13, W53, W72, and W158; P50 (from Japan); Tabel® Edabriz; CT500, CT2753, Korponay, and Erdi V (P. mahaleb from Hungary); and P. mahaleb as the control.
The trees are being produced by a commercial nursery in Oregon, USA and will be shipped to the cooperators early in the spring of 1998. An appropriate pollinizer cultivar will be selected for the sweet cherry trials.
The design of the trial will be a randomized complete block with eight single-tree replicates.
If a cooperator has both the sweet and sour cherry trial, they will be analysed separately.
The data to be collected annually by each site include: trunk cross-sectional area, tree height, tree spread, yield per tree, and average fruit size.
Each cooperator will be free to undertake studies within the planting depending on the expertise of the local research team, such as nutrition, cold hardiness, or disease response, etc.
