Abstract
Four types of ‘Schattenmorelle’ maiden trees were compared: (a) ‘Schattenmorelle’, clone No. 226 on Prumus avium seedling sel.
Altenweddingen; (b) ‘Schattenmorelle’, clone No. 226/80 on Pr. avium Altenweddingen;© No. 226/80 on Pr. avium of Polish selection (B. Czarnecki) and (d) No. 226/80 self-rooted, propagated by green cuttings.
In general, self-rooted trees of ‘Schattenmorelle’ clone 226/80 showed lower vigour, compared with trees on rootstocks.
It was manifested by a reduced shoot number and of total shoot lenght per tree in the first year after planting and by significantly reduced increase of trunk cross section area (in cm2) in successive biennial periods.
After four years of study, self-rooted trees had size (expressed as trunk cross section area) by 34–46% smaller, compared with the trees on rootstocks.
Between two clones of ‘Schattenmorelle’ no differences in vegetative growth were observed.
In the years 1990 and 1991 all fruit indices were affected by the type of root system.
Self-rooted trees yielded by about 37% more in the first year and about 9% more in the second year of bearing; a better productivity of self-rooted trees was apparently due to a better fruit set and to a bigger fruit size.
In the third year of bearing and the fourth year after planting (1992) no significant differences in yield per tree due to root system were found.
Nevertheless, as self-rooted trees were about 40% smaller, their cropping efficiency index was 22% higher then that of trees grown on seedling rootstocks.
Two ‘Schattenmorelle’ clones did not differ in fruit indices, any time of this study.
The results obtained indicate that type of root system plays an important role in growth and productivity of sour cherry trees and that self-rooted trees are promising as smaller and more productive.
