Abstract
Three viruses have been associated with most lily diseases; lily symptomless virus (LSV), tulip breaking virus (TBV), and cucumber mosaic virus (CMV). Most lilies contained LSV. Vegetative propagation on tissue culture media freed ten lilies of viruses.
In subsequent field propagation, virus-free lilies were isolated from virus sources and sprayed weekly with oil to prevent virus infection.
Stem bulbils from virus-free field-grown "Enchantment" produced plants with three times as many leaves, three times the weight and twice the height of plants from virus-infected bulbils.
Plants from virus-free bulbs were 25 to 50% taller than plants from virus-infected bulbs.
