Abstract
Three times of application of mulch were tested and all the mulching treatments gave higher yields than the unmulched one.
There were no large differences between mulches applied in November and December, but mulches applied in January were less beneficial.
Three amounts of mulching (0.5, 1.0 and 1.5 kg/m2) were tested and the experiments show that yield increases with the amount of mulching material but the increase in yield is very small for the last 0.5 layer, and is not sufficient to cover the extra cost.
Therefore 1 kg chaff or chopped straw per square metre or 1 bale of sphagnum per 25 square metres is to be recommended under Danish conditions.
