Abstract
Yellow disease, caused by the bacterium Xanthomonas hyacinthi (Wakker) Dowson, is the most important disease of hyacinths.
The bacteria present in the bulb at planting can spread from the bulb into the leaves, and from early spring onward the disease can be dispersed in the field by rain and wind.
In addition, machines used for the lifting and sorting of bulbs and knives used for scooping and scoring can spread the bacteria from diseased bulbs to healthy ones.
