Abstract
Data were collected during one season (1973/74) to test some assumptions of a simple model for the cold requirement of the tulip based on changes in the carbohydrate status of the tulip with different temperature treatments.
The data generally support the assumptions of the model, although some extension may be required when further data become available.

The role of models of this type in helping to interpret and quantify experimental data is discussed.
