EVALUATION OF PILLNITZ RE-CULTIVARS® IN TWO APPLE PRODUC-TION AREAS OF HUNGARY

Abstract
In the early nineties a project was initiated to evaluate ten scab resistant cultivars selected in Dresden-Pillnitz in the central and eastern apple production areas of Hungary.
In 1993, ‘Retina’, ‘Reanda’, ‘Releika’, ‘Relinda’, ‘Remo’, ‘Renora’, ‘Resi’, ‘Rewena’, ‘Reglindis’, and ‘Reka’ were top-grafted on adult trees of ‘Jonathan’ on M 4, and in 1994 four trees of each cultivar on M 26 were planted in Szigetcsép, at the Research Station of the University of Horticulture.
Eight of these Re-cultivars were also grown in Újfehertó Research Station, located in the main apple production area of Hungary.
The trees were grown without fungicide sprays.
Directly after harvest in Szigetcsép, fruits of ‘Reanda’ and ‘Releika’ were preferred overall, but they were less preferred than ‘Freedom’. Following 6 months storage, ‘Reanda’ and ‘Relinda’ were the most preferred among the scab resistant cultivars.
In Újfehértó the colour, the texture and the flavour of ‘Rewena’ were the most preferred, followed by ‘Relinda’ and ‘Renora’. Significant differences in storability of the cultivars were found.
Scab infection of the leaves or fruits were never noticed in the fields.
High levels of infection by powdery mildew were observed on the varieties ‘Resi’, ‘Releika’, moderate levels on ‘Reanda’, ‘Renora’, ‘Retina’ and ‘Relinda’ and low levels on the others.
