Abstract
There are considerable differences among the sour cherry cultivars in secretory activity, and both of the quality and quantity of nectar production of the flowers.
Several types of delayed homogamy beginning with protogyny occur.
Besides the cultivar ‘Érdi nagygyümölcsü’ pollinated by wind, beetles, and other insects, producing nectar even in bud stage, nectarless types of protogynous buds can also be found.
Besides the delayed homogamous types with initial protogyny there are cultivars with flowers of continuous homogamy and autogamic flowers as well.
Features of autogamy are clearly manifested in some cultivars, like the bending of stamina towards the pistil or vice versa, either at the end of the flowering or even starting at the beginning of bloom time.
According to studies of free pollination, fruit set is the best in genetic self-fertile cultivars, rather than in those with delayed autogamy.
With some cultivars the flowers of different biological types occur in the same tree.
Pollination efficiency of cultivars with stamens bending away from the pistil depends on nectar production while in flowers with stamens leaning towards to the pistil and in self-fertile cultivars the role of the nectar may become of secondary importance.
Periodicity of flower activities is not uniform in the cultivars studied and this is a point to be considered in the planning of orchards with self-sterile cultivars.
