STUDIES ON PERSPECTIVE APPLE AND PEAR HYBRIDS OF BREEDING STATION “IEDZENI” IN LATVIA

Results of observation on pear and apple hybrids by Breeding Station “Iedzeni” in Latvia are discussed in this article.
Several varieties with suitable winter hardiness, prolonged period of dormancy and excellent taste quality have been obtained as a result of a long-term breeding program.
Some of them have potential value for commercial orchards.
The best varieties and hybrids are described.
Apple hybrids include: `Alro`, `Iedzenu`, `Raja`, `Stars`, `Forele` which have become popular with growers.
Recent cultivars `Arona`, `Atmoda`, `Olga`, `Marta` and `Agra` and new columnar apple hybrid `Duets` are recommended to variety registration.
Pear hybrids `Suvenirs`, `Talismans`, Zemgale`, AMD – 42-5-28 were recommended for growing in Latvia after evaluation in Pure State Horticultural Research Station in addition to those most often planted `Kursa`, and `Vidzeme`. Evaluation of the majority of 3-rd generation pear hybrids and apple hybrids with the columnar gene (Co) are not completed but continues in Pure State Horticultural Research Station at present.
