CLASSIFICATION OF APPLE SCAB RESISTANCE IN AN UNSPRAYED ASSORTMENT ORCHARD

The aim is to identify apple varieties capable of producing fruit with no or limited fungicide treatments in future organic growing systems.
A first step is to evaluate an existing assortment orchard situated at Alnarp, south of Sweden.
The orchard has not been treated with fungicides for the last three years.
Parts of an orchard at the breeding station Balsgård were also evaluated.
Classification of the leaves and fruits were made using disease indices from 0-4, where 0= no apple scab and 4= apple scab symptoms on
> 50 % of the leaves.
The results showed a prevalence for class 3 and 4, followed by class 2, class 1 and class 0 for the years 1998-99. The fruits were in average slightly less attacked by scab.
Scab incidence was higher in 1999 than in 1998.
