Abstract
The durable resistance breeding programme began in 1984. New sources of resistance to Venturia inaequalis with Vf gene (‘BM 41497’, ‘X1924’, ‘Prima’, ‘Liberty’, ‘Priscilla’, ‘Florina’, ‘Macfree’, ‘OR38T17’), Vr gene (‘R 12740-7 A’) , Vm gene( SR 0523) and promising selections of M. sieboldii, M. micromalus, M. baccata and M. sargentii were used in addition to tolerant varieties and local selections.
A result of the programme are 136 progenies with a total number of more than 30,000 seedlings.
All seedlings were assessed for their susceptibility to scab after artifical inoculation in the isolated nursery and 4,097 seedlings continued to show spontaneous infections after natural inoculation in the orchard (1990, 1994 – epiphytotic years), where they had grown without any chemical sprays against the disease.
After evalution of three cropping seasons, 132 selections were propagated. 31 of them have large fruit, good flavour and storability and were budded on the russian rootstock ‘62-396’. An investigation for resistance to canker damage of trees were carried out.
There are some new selections with combined resistance to fungal diseases and most of them were cropping in the new orchard three times in 1997, 1998 and 1999.
