Abstract
High air temperature and drought as the main factors limit photosynthesis and can reduce the productivity of fruit plants.
Jujube (Ziziphus jujuba Mill.) is a fairly heat-resistant and drought-resistant plant.
Despite this, an increase in temperature to +40-45°С leads to inhibition of photosynthetic activity of leaves and significantly affects the productivity of photosynthesis.
The study was conducted during the period 2016-2020 in the Nikita Botanical Gardens, located in Yalta.
Studies of the pigment apparatus were carried out on leaves of the following cultivars of jujube: Koktebel, Meteor, Konfetny. For temperature exposure (40°С), and gradual dehydration by high temperature the TTC 256 Memmert climate test chamber was used with Celsius software (Memmert, Germany, 2017) and one elevated temperature level of +40°С. The duration of temperature exposure was 2, 4, and 6 h.
Chlorophyll fluorescence was measured on a MINI-PAM II portable pulsed fluorimeter (HeinzWalz, Germany, 2017). The jujube cultivar Konfetny with high potential heat resistance was selected, as evidenced by the dynamics of changes in the main indicators of photosynthetic activity.
Recorded decline of variable fluorescence (from 1754 to 1063 relative units), maximum photochemical quantum yield of PSII (from 0.81 to 0.62), photosynthetic activity (from 0.77 to 0.76), fluorescence decay coefficient (from 3.39 to 3.31) and effective photochemical quantum yield of PSII (from 0.31 to 0.21). In this cultivar, the decrease in the maximum photochemical quantum yield of PSII relative to control at 2-h thermal exposure in average was 16.2%, at 4-h 19.6%, and at 6-h 23.0%. Changes in the kinetic processes of the induction of chlorophyll fluorescence at different exposures are less expressed in the cultivar Konfetny compared with other cultivars. Konfetny, which is resistant to hyperthermic stress, can be recommended as a source of high thermal stability for use in the breeding process.
