Hotspots and trends of international studies on jujube (Ziziphus Mill.) based on bibliometric analysis

Abstract
Ziziphus Mill. or Zizyphus Mill. (jujube) is the most important genus, of approximately 170 species, in the family Rhamnaceae. It plays an increasingly important role in the economic and ecological construction in arid and saline regions and is getting more and more attention of related researchers.
We took the journal papers from 2010 to 2020 in the web of science and PubMed database as the data source, took jujube (jujube, Ziziphus, Zizyphus) as the theme to search the literature in the field of jujube, and chose literature type with review and article and language limit with English. Using the bibliometric analysis method, the retrieved literature were sorted and counted by Excel software, and the author cooperation analysis and research hotspot (keyword) analysis were carried out by VOSviewer software.
The results showed that a total of 613 English papers on jujube were published in the world from 2010 to 2020. The global research on jujube showed a rapid upward trend.
The number of articles published annually soared from 20 in 2010 to 115 in 2020, and the quality of articles and journals published has continuously improved.
The majority of the papers are concentrated in four species of the genus, i.e., Chinese jujube (Chinese date, Z. jujuba), Indian jujube or Ber (Z. mauritiana), Z. nummularia and Z. spina-christi, with total number of 308, 103, 52 and 28, respectively.
The articles were published in 332 journals, of which Food Chemistry, Scientia Horticulture, Journal of Agricultural and Food Chemistry, Molecules and PLOS One published most jujube articles and Nature Communications was the top journal in publishing jujube papers.
There were 412 research institutes distributed in 71 countries, with China, India, Iran, Saudi Arabia and Pakistan ranking the top five countries by number of publications.
China published 203 papers, mainly focusing on Chinese jujube with certain number of articles on Z. spina-christi and Z. mauritiana, India published 68 articles, concentrating on Z. mauritiana. Furthermore, the number of researchers engaged in jujube research reached 557 in 2020, and the top five are Mengjun Liu, Jin Zhao, Xingang Li, Jin-ao Duan and Xiaoming Pang.
However, multi-unit cooperative research is limited, and the proportion of papers completed by only one institution is up to 72.76%. In view of the research status and development trends, it is proposed to strengthen the cross-continent and cross-country cooperative research on major theories, technologies and basic work in the future, to pay more attention to study wild germplasm, molecular breeding, intelligent cultivation, automatic postharvest and high-value processing, so as to accelerate the modernization of the research and production of jujube.
This research could provide reference for future research and international exchange and cooperation in jujube.
