Abstract
This study determined the protein content of the pollen of the Turkish hazelnut cultivars Allahverdi, Cavcava, Çakıldak, Foşa, İncekara, Kalınkara, Kara Fındık, Kargalak, Mincane, Okay 28, Palaz, Sivri, Tombul, and Uzunmusa. Pollen was obtained from plants of the same age growing under the same conditions in the hazelnut collection orchard at the Hazelnut Research Institute in Giresun.
Pollen was collected from the plants when the catkins began to shed pollen.
Catkins were collected in the orchard when newly elongated, brought to the lab, and dried overnight on paper.
By the next day, the anthers had dehisced, and the pollen was collected from the paper, placed in glass vials, and frozen.
The Kjeldal method was used to measure protein content.
Differences in protein content were detected among the cultivars, and ranged from 23.98 to 28.17%. The highest value was in Kalınkara and the lowest in Sivri and Allahverdi. The protein content in the pollen of all plants ranges between 1.5 and 48.4%. In this respect, the protein content values for hazelnut pollen are relatively high.
