Abstract
Controlling weeds in hazelnuts is essential to reduce competition and allow for efficient harvest.
Herbicides are the primary tool for weed control in Oregon orchards, with preemergence herbicides applied in the fall and postemergence herbicides applied in the spring and summer.
Postemergence herbicide resistant Italian ryegrass (Lolium perenne ssp. multiflorum) requires growers to employ new herbicide modes of action, carefully observe application timings, and use herbicide mixtures to reduce selection for resistant weeds.
Expanding the number and modes of action of preemergence herbicides would provide additional management tools for herbicide resistance.
At this time, Italian ryegrass resistance to preemergence herbicides approved for use in hazelnuts has not been documented.
The objective of this study was to evaluate the efficacy of sequential applications of preemergence herbicides to manage Italian ryegrass and annual bluegrass in hazelnut orchards.
A field experiment compared the efficacy of fall-applied preemergence herbicides followed by spring-applied preemergence herbicides.
Among the fall-applied herbicides, indaziflam (0.09 kg ai ha‑1) provided the highest level of Italian ryegrass control.
Most of the fall-applied preemergence herbicides effectively controlled annual bluegrass, except for sulfentrazone (0.41 kg ai ha‑1). A spring-applied preemergence herbicide reduced weed biomass by 26-71% compared to nontreated.
The use of fall-applied followed by spring-applied preemergence herbicides can improve and extend weed control in hazelnut orchards, manage resistance development, and reduce the need for postemergence herbicides during the summer season.
