Abstract
The availability of a georeferenced data set of hazelnut phenological observations is essential for studying the effects of environmental cues and for real-time orchard monitoring at various spatial scales.
Such a data set would enable the development of digital services for early warning of disease risk and frost stresses, up to yield predictions.
This paper presents a hazelnut phenological data set collected through a network of field surveys established in 2019 (more than 3,000 data samples in January 2023). The network consists of 22 orchards located at different elevations in the most important producing provinces in Turkey.
Weekly samplings are collected by agronomists who gathered information on male and female reproductive and vegetative phenophases.
Ground-truth observations were used to derive median dates and distributions, leading to the computation of hazelnut phenological calendars aggregated by geographical criteria (region, province), hazelnut cultivar, and elevation bands.
This network of field surveys represents an invaluable data source for real-time monitoring of hazelnut growing conditions in the worlds leading producing country and is active nowadays.
The collected data have been used to improve tools for forecasting frost risk and yield, and as the starting point to study the effects of climate variability on plant phenology using remote sensing data.
