Abstract
Brown marmorated stink bug, Halyomorpha halys (Hemiptera: Pentatomidae) feeding on hazelnut can prevent or impair kernel development, causing economic damage to the hazelnut industry.
To determine which hazelnut-produced volatile organic compounds (VOCs) may act as host cues for H. halys, the physiological responses of H. halys adult and nymphal antennae to select VOCs were recorded by gas chromatographic-electroantennographic detection (GC-EAD). The behavioral effects of five EAD-active compounds were assessed using single-choice olfactometer bioassays.
The monounsaturated fatty aldehyde trans-2-heptental appeared to be attractive, particularly to adult females.
Trans-2-heptenal, which is produced by oxidation of lipids, could act as a signal of high-energy resources to H. halys. Adult attraction to trans-2-heptenal was reduced when this compound was combined with EAD-active sesquiterpenes.
Nymphal antennae responded less consistently to the VOCs tested.
Adult and nymphal behavioral responses to the sesquiterpenes α-cedrene and germacrene-D differed in bioassays.
