Establishment of the samurai wasp (Trissolcus japonicus), a biological control agent of the brown marmorated stink bug (Halyomorpha halys), in Oregon

Abstract
The brown marmorated stink bug, Halyomorpha halys, is a polyphagous and invasive pest that has caused millions of dollars of economic damage in North American crops and is an increasing problem to the specialty crop industry in the Pacific Northwest.
A common control method for this pest is the use of broad-spectrum insecticides; however, these are frequently overused and can be destructive to integrated pest management (IPM) programs already in place.
In its home range, the samurai wasp (Trissolcus japonicus) is known to be an effective biological control agent of H. halys, with observed parasitism rates as high as 90%. To combat H. halys damage, our lab released T. japonicus populations at riparian areas bordering specialty crop orchards in western Oregon.
In 2019 and 2020, we expanded our redistribution efforts to 69 total sites.
Between 2016 and 2021, we assessed within-season and multi-year establishment of the released populations using yellow sticky cards.
Between 2018 and 2020, we also continued to monitor for T. japonicus using fresh sentinel, frozen sentinel, and wild-collected egg masses.
By 2021, we expanded our monitoring efforts of T. japonicus in Oregon to 90 sites across 6 ecoregions.
Here, we present the results of our statewide redistribution and monitoring efforts of this biological control agent in Oregon.
