Advances in sucker management of hazelnut in Oregon

Abstract

Hazelnut is a multi-stemmed bush that can be trained to a single trunk to facilitate harvest and increase yield.
Removal of suckers is a labor-intensive process.
In Oregon, the standard practice is in-season chemical control coupled with dormant-season manual pruning.
Successful chemical control of suckers is dependent on multiple factors, including herbicide selection, size of suckers at time of treatment, number of treatments per season, and equipment configuration.
Concerns about labor shortages and herbicides causing crop injury highlight a need for alternative sucker management.
Over the past five years, research on the use of the plant growth regulator 1-naphthaleneacetic acid (NAA) has shown the potential to reduce labor and herbicide use in sucker management.
Additional research is now exploring mechanized pruning and chemical control, which may offer new management options for hazelnut sucker management.
This paper provides a summary of current efforts and outlines opportunities for future improvements.
