Abstract

Although hazelnut is considered a hardy plant, it requires an appropriate nutrition program to produce high quantities of hazelnuts with high kernel percentage.
In three-year trials, two sites in major production areas (Piemonte and Lazio) were chosen to test the effect of increasing fertilization rates on hazelnut production and quality.
The results of both trials showed that higher fertilization rates increased production and kernel percentage until reaching a certain threshold.
Indeed, the treatments with the highest rates did not bring a sufficient increase in production and kernel percentage to justify their application.
The goal of these trials was to determine which fertilization strategy could be the most environmentally and economically sustainable by examining the changes in hazelnut yield and quality properties as a result of increasing ground and foliar fertilizer applications in hazelnut orchards located in two regions of Italy.
