Updating hazelnut nitrogen requirements for modern production practices

Abstract
Nitrogen (N) fertilizers coupled with irrigation offer a viable option to improve hazelnut yields.
Herein, we document the transition to modern production practices for hazelnut while outlining the need to update N requirements to balance productivity with sustainability.
We report on progress made acquiring information on 1) N content of different hazelnut plant tissues, 2) the impact of irrigation and dryland farming on N partitioning and tree N status, and 3) differences in yield potential between irrigated and dryland hazelnut production.
Sampling and analysis of different hazelnut plant tissues for N content showed significant differences.
The impact of irrigation on N partitioning was evidenced by all plant tissues showing higher 15N enrichment from irrigation compared to dryland conditions.
Furthermore, significant differences were shown by greater yield of irrigated compared to dryland hazelnut production.
As a whole, our work demonstrates fertigation requires careful management of irrigation water in order to make the most efficient use of N fertilizer application.
