Propagation of Turkish hazelnut cultivars with softwood cuttings

Abstract
This study investigated rooting of softwood cuttings of the Turkish hazelnut cultivars Tombul, Çakıldak and Okay 28. Cuttings were prepared from the upper and lower parts of the suckers in June.
The cuttings were dipped in 1500 ppm IBA and placed in perlite in a mist bench.
Rooting was evaluated after 50 days.
The apical cuttings of Okay 28 gave the highest rooting (70.0%) in 2021, but it was lower (44.7%) in the previous year.
The cuttings from the basal part of the suckers of Tombul gave the lowest rooting of 30 and 15.7% in 2020 and 2021, respectively.
While the cuttings prepared from the shoot tips in all cultivars in 2020 provided significantly better root formation than those from the basal part, in 2021, only the lower and upper cuttings of Okay 28 were found to be different.
In Tombul and Çakıldak, no significant difference was found in the lower and upper cuttings in 2021. Rooted cuttings were planted and grown in pots.
In the measurements made after 3 months, the survival rate among the cultivars ranged from 70 to 93.3%, and an average of one shoot was observed on each surviving plant.
We suggest the use of softwood tip cuttings for clonal propagation although further treatments should be tested as the current levels of rooting are insufficient for clonal propagation on a commercial scale.
