Abstract
Prunus cerasifera Ehrh. /var. myrobalan/, myrobalan grafted by the best Hungarian sort of Prunus armeniaca L., and Prunus armeniaca L. /seedling, var.
Perna/ were injected with 2-methyl-4-chlorophenoxyacetic acid to induce gum production.
The gum exudates collected during the vegetative cycle from various parts of the trees /stem, graft/ were analyzed for monosaccharide composition and some physico-chemical properties.
It was found that variations in contents of D-galactose, L-arabinose, and 4-O-methyl- -D-glucuronic acid reflected structural alterations of side chains only, while the interior chains of the polysaccharides remained unchanged, as evidenced by the fragments obtained on partial acid hydrolysis.
The equivalent and molecular weights as well as the ratios of L-arabinose and D-galactose indicated that the polysaccharides obtained from myrobalan were structurally similar to those obtained from plum-tree /Prunus domestica L., ssp. domestica/, while the polysaccharides obtained from apricot cultures were similar to that obtained from apricot gum secreted under natural conditions.
It seems that, even after several years, each part of the tree /stem, graft/ secretes gums characteristic of its origin.
