Abstract
A study was carried out for establishing the presence of prunus necrotic ringspot (PNRV), prune dwarf (PDV) and apple mosaic (ApMV) ilaviruses in apricot and plum pollen and ovules.
Pollen and ovules were collected from 6 plum and 6 apricot trees at the beginning of blooming.
Of plum trees, 3 (cv.Angeleno, Friar and Stanley) were infected with PNRV, 2 (cv.
Ozark Premier and Regina Claudia) with PDV and 1 (cv. unidentified) with ApMV. Of apricot trees, 3 (cv.
Tirynthos, Errani and Reale d’Imola) were infected with PNRV, 1 (cv.
Tinrynthos) with PDV and 2 (cv.
Cibo del Paradiso and unidentified- with ApMV. Control pollen and ovules were collected from serologically tested healthy plum and apricot plants.
Pollen grains and ovules were tested in ELISA for the presence of viruses, using both locally prepared conjugates and commercial kits.
PNRV and PDV were found in pollen grains of apricot and plum both externally and internally and in the ovules of all tested cultivars.
Conversely, ApMV was not detected in pollen or ovules of any of the plum and apricot cultivar tested.
