Abstract
First investigations on the spread of plum pox virus (PPV) by ELISA technique revealed in orchards a high infection rate, varying with the fruit growing region.
In consequence an intensified testing program of nurseries (600–700 samples per year) was started, especially in Steiermark and Niederösterreich.

Eradication of trees (21.000 in 1988, Steiermark) in the infection areas led to a certain reduction of PPV infections.
In order to reduce the problem of virus-infected propagation material, a stone fruit propagating stock plantation was established in Niederösterreich (50 varieties). Beginning with ELISA testings of plum pox (PPV), prunus necrotic ringspot (PNRV), prune dwarf (PDV), and apple chlorotic leaf spot virus (ACLSV) the virus indexing will be increased and diversified.
