Abstract
In 1983 a sweet cherry varietal collection was established in Apulia, in southern Italy.
The aim was to find new genotypes to enrich the local varietal assortment, presently based on only two cultivars, ‘Bigarreau Moreau’ and ‘Ferrovia’. From among 81 cultivars introduced between 1983 and 1984, the following 10 have so far exhibited suitable characteristics and performed satisfactorily: ‘Bing’, ‘Gemersdorfer’, ‘Giorgia’, ‘Hedelfinger’, ‘Lapins’, ‘Malizia falsa’, ‘S.H. Giant’, ‘Sunburst’, ‘Ulster’ and ‘Van’. The hypothesis that ‘Ferrovia’ and ‘Gemersdorfer’ are synonymous is put forward.
