EXTENSION GROWTH OF THE SOUR CHERRY `STEVNSBAER’ AS AFFECTED BY FERTIGATION WITH INCREASING NITROGEN LEVELS

Abstract
One-year-old trees of sour cherry (Prunus cerasus cv. ‘Stevnsbaer’) on rootstock P. avium were grown in 25-litre pots in a porous soil.
Trees were fertigated 1–2 times each day, using 6 levels of nitrogen application ranging from 1 to 30 meq N per litre.
New extension growth increased over the entire nitrogen application range.
The average shoot length remained constant at the highest nitrogen levels, where the number of shoots increased significantly.
Feathers occured in all treatments, the number of such shoots being enhanced by increasing nitrogen application.
These and previous investigations indicate that in Denmark the extension growth potential of ‘Stevnsbaer’ in the year after planting and the second leaf is around 30 m per tree (including feathers), when root conditions, including water and nitrogen supply are near optimal.
