PERFORMANCE OF THE “GM” ROOTSTOCKS IN HIGH-DENSITY SWEET CHERRY ORCHARDS

Abstract
High density sweet cherry orchards have expanded due to the recent choice of dwarfing rootstocks, research on orchard management, and new self-fertile varieties with denser flowering habit and large fruit size.

Among the dwarfing rootstocks, Damil (GM 61/1), Camil (GM 79) and Inmil (GM 9) were selected at our Research Station from a population of botanical Prunus (Tréfois, 1985). Damil has been grafted with more than 140 different varieties.
Since 1985, comparisons have been made of two high density orchard systems: "GM" spindle and hedge.
In addition, 52 of these varieties were grafted onto Camil and 75 grafted onto Inmil; all were planted only in the hedge system.
The results for tree vigour, flowering potential and fruit set are presented.
