Abstract
Orchard design and tree structure may affect the fruit set and yield in sweet cherry.
In fact, observations carried out in a commercial orchard over three years showed that fruit set is higher in trees planted closest to both the ‘Stella’ pollinizer and the bee hives.
As far as tree structure is concerned, higher fruit set was obtained with higher branching hierarchy, that is to say on the periphery of the canopy.
These results suggest the importance of a suitable orchard design, with appropriate spatial location of the pollinizers (pollinating varieties) and the bee hives, as well as adequate tree training and pruning.
