FRUIT DESCRIPTIVE AND QUALITATIVE TRAITS OF NEW TOMATO CULTIVARS ADAPTED TO MEDITERRANEAN CLIMATIC CONDITIONS

Abstract
The study of 15 fruit descriptive and qualitative traits in eight lines and one variety selected in ARCNG (Greece), four "Marmande" type hybrids selected in CSIC (Spain), two hybrids selected in ISO (Italy), their controls and some other commercial hybrids and varieties of tomatoes was the subject of this research work.
THe expirements took place in the open field and in a greenhouse in Northern Greece.
Most of the lines produced fruits with descriptive and qualitative traits similar to those of their ancestors, except the line Gr-p, which produced fruits of light-green immature colour and without shoulders.
All the "Marmande" type hybrids showed fruits with flattened shape of polar section and strong ribs.
The hybrids Erito, Echione and Tresor produced fruits of the smallest size, the lowest loculi number and the largest pericarp width.
The firmest fruits were produced by Atletta, Daniela, and Erito.
The percent solids were higher in Echione, the descendants of Dombo, Erito, Caruso, Gr-p, Gr-k, Marbella, Profer-2, Daniela, Tresor, and Carpy.
In the open field conditions, the inhibition of friut growth, which caused a gradual decrease in the fruits size of the cultivars with compound trusses, induced increased accumulation of soluble and total solids.
The greenhouse conditions affected positively the mean fruit weight during the harvest period, but decreased in the soluble and total solids.
There were no differences in pH in the greenhouse, while in the open field higher pH were noticed in Carmello, its lines, Tresor, Daniela, Carpy, Caruso, Marmande and Marbella.
