Abstract
The genus Solanum is extremely profuse both in terms of total number of species and of number of species having an interest for mankind.
Concerning their use as fresh market products, potato and eggplant have become world crops.
However, both of these general names include not only the well known species, respectively Solanum tuberosum subsp. tuberosum and Solanum melongena, but also other species, cultivated in more limited geographical areas.
These are the other potato species cultivated in the Andes (S. stenotomum, S. phureja, etc. ) and also the other eggplant species cultivated in particular in Africa (S. aethiopicum and S. macrocarpon). Several South American Solanum species bear sweet fruits and might be also worth investigation as potential "new" species for the European market such as the pepino (S. muricatum), the lulo (S. quitoense), the cocona (S. sessiliflorum) and their relatives.
Lastly a lot of other species are used in more restricted areas of Africa, Asia and Australasia as S. nigrum agg., S. torvum, etc..
