RESULTS OF PEPPER BREEDING IN HUNGARY
In this time nearly 50 varieties and hybrids bred in the Institute were released.
Besides resistance breeding research has aimed at introducing new fruit types differing in shape from the typical Hungarian pepper varieties in the last 15–20 years.
In protected culture TMV (Tobacco mosaic virus) is the most important disease.
Resistant genes – L1 (Tm 0), L3 (Tm 2), L4 (Tm 3) are being introduced to control the different virus races.
At present we have a hybrid carrying L3 resistance gene in every pepper type.
A female line containing L4 gene is also available together with its hot hybrid of pointed fruit shape (H 19–6 F1).
Research programs also include breeding for CMV (Cucumber mosaic virus) and Xanthomonas tolerance.
There are such varieties in every type, e.g.
Tizenegyes, Táltos synthetic, B-56, Édesalma.
Tomato-shaped peppers play an important part in the canning industry an in export.
Old varieties susceptible to Alternaria need relpacing with resistant ones.
Greygo is the first tolerant variety with closed style end.
Research also involves the development of male-sterile (ms) female lines in every variety type to imrove hybrid seed production.
A new breeding program includes the introduction of blocky fruit shape into both indeterminate and determinate varieties.
