Abstract
A greenhouse experiment was carried out in order to study the influence of ammonium-fertilization time on nutrients uptake, mineral composition, and hield of pepper plants grown hydroponically.
Four treatments were compared: N (nitrogen was supplied as nitrate), A (nitrogen was supplied as nitrate + ammonium throughout the experiment). As (ammonium was added during the first six weeks of cultivation and nitrate afterwards), and A9 (ammonium was supplied during the first nine weeks and nitrate afterwards). Nitrate, phosphorus, calcium, and magnesium uptake were lower when ammonium was supplied to the plants.
This effect was more noticeable when ammonium was supplied during longer periods.
However, no differences were observed in total nitrogen (nitrate + ammonium) and potassium consumptions.
Nitrogen contents in the plants were not significantly different between treatment treatment.
Calcium and magnesium concentrations in plants were lower in A9 than A6. Plants tended to yield less with longer periods of ammonium fertilization.
