Abstract
Three models of rapid long-distance wound signalling in tomato are currently considered: (Phloem transmission, Hydraulic dispersal and Electrical Signalling). Experiments were carried out in order to discrimate between these three models.
The passage of wound signals and hydraulic events across a steam-killed section 30mm long in the centre of the petiole demonstrated that long-distance wound signalling occurs by hydraulic dispersal of chemical elicitors in the xylem borne mass flows.
It was also demonstrate that brief feeding by individual Spodoptera larvae also triggers substantial hydraulic events.
