Abstract
Many Heliconia species are polymorphic with large number of cultivars.
Identification of these cultivars has been primarily based on morphological differences of the flowers and inflorescences.
A protocol was devised to extract DNA from Heliconia leaves, and by means of Random Amplified Polymorphic DNA (RAPD) analysis genetic variations and similarities were detected among Heliconia species, cultivars and hybrids.
