Abstract
Hybridisation was carried out between the unstable cv.
Gram Slam and the stable cv.
Parisienne using embryo rescue.
Hybrids showed somaclonal variation in their adventitious regenerants.
Selected clones also showed somaclonal variation in their progeny.
Selected clones from the latter population, however, were stable in conventional vegetative propagation.
Genetic variability was quantified by image analysis.
The non-conventional breeding strategy described is discussed in relation to improvement of P. x domesticum.
