Abstract
Callus cultures of Encephalartos cycadifolius were initiated from zygotic embryo explants on a modified Gamborg B5 medium supplemented with 1 mg l-1 2,4-D and 1 mg l-1 kinetin.
Somatic embryos developed on this medium as well as on media with various combinations of 2,4-D and kinetin.
Proembryos appeared in the callus, these developed into suspensors.
Dicotyledonary embryos developed at the distal ends of the suspensors.
In light the embryos became green.
Radicles have to date not developed on the embryos.
