Abstract
Larkin and Snowcroft (1981) and many other authors have advocated the view that somacional variation is a new source for genetic variations that can be used in breeding for the production of new cultivars.
Ever since, however, it has become clear that the usefulness of somacional variation in breeding is very limited.
As a matter of fact, the problem of undesirable mutations induced by adventitious regeneration is more prominent.
This holds in particular for the regeneration of plants from genetically engineered cells after a callus-phase and for propagation of plants via somatic embryogenesis from cell suspensions.
