Abstract
Drought, expressed at the plant level as water deficit, is the main factor in reducing productivity of agriculture and forestry in arid and semi-arid zones.
The physiology of plant response to drought stress has been well studied.
Further elucidation of plant response to drought requires a comprehensive study of molecular events that occur during water stress.
When plants are subjected to water stress, a large number of genes is activated, leading to an accumulation of new drought-specific proteins (Bray 1993). It is generally assumed that these proteins may play a role in determining genotype differences in plant tolerance to drought.
A 66 kD boiling-stable protein (BspA), which was first detected and characterized in water-stressed aspen plantlets (Populus tremula) (Pelah, et al., 1995) was found also in other poplar genotypes.
